Recently, one of my many journeys took me to Ondo state, Akure precisely. It was for the wedding of an old friend, Femi. Asides being my best friend, he had chosen me to be his best man. The event almost proceeded on a sour note due to the obvious absence of the wedding cake. There was palpable fear on the face of the bride who had contracted a friend of hers with the making of the cake. Minutes ran into hours and there was almost no cake to be cut.
It was becoming an embarrassing scenario as the MC had to skip the cake cutting ritual to give little time for its arrival.
No reasonable explanation was given about why the cake hadn't arrived. The only thing I kept hearing was "Her number is switched off". "Could she have been involved in an accident on her way to the reception?".Femi managed to ask me quietly.
"God forbid, it could be for some other reasons".I said with weak conviction that did nothing but escalate the fear on the bride's face who had heard Femi's thought.
It couldn't have been that the cake and its carrier were held in traffic, this was Akure and not Lagos, so the excuse of a traffic 'hold up' was a no-brainer.
But for the timely intervention of VICKYTEE'S cakes and pastries, it would have been a day the new couple would want to forget as quickly as possible.
A guest who had enjoyed their service in recent past on her birthday had to put a call through when it became apparent that the planned cake wasn't going to arrive anytime soon.
The amazing thing was even though they weren't contracted to make the cake for the event originally, they brought one they had made for an exhibition.
In the end, no one seem to remember we almost had a wedding without a cake as they happily dug into their piece and ate on in merriment. Reasonably affordable and way cheaper than its quality with a commendable touch of class.
As for what had happened to the original Baker, long story but we had to go bail her at the police station eventually.
Though young in operations and services but aged in service delivery and professionalism.
